How does place shape identity? How do social systems shape us? What impact can we have on social systems? This unit invites students to make connections between various aspects of their identity, origins, and culture. They are asked to build upon family, community, and personal experiences to understand concepts of home and belonging, and explore how this interacts with the formation of self. Through this exploratory process, students engage in research to understand housing and analyze community needs. Designed for 8th grade U.S. History, this unit can be adapted to various subject areas, including Ethnic Studies and English Language Arts.
