On September 7, 2009, at the TIDES Momentum Conference in San Francisco, john a. powell presented a talk on “Creating Momentum for Transformative Change: Addressing the Racialized Structure of Opportunity.” powell began his talk by sharing his personal background, growing up in “a low opportunity structure in a declining opportunity city.” powell further expanded on how opportunity is deeply racialized, using the example of foreclosures in Black and Latino communities. Lastly, powell emphasized the importance of taking a systemic view and studying interrelationships in order to combat opportunity isolation.
