On March 5, 2020, Director powell spoke on a panel about hate speech and free speech doctrine at Berkeley Law School sponsored by the Berkeley Law American Constitution Society. Director powell discussed the shortcomings of free speech absolutism as it fails to adequately accommodate the equality principle of the constitution. He also addressed the ways in which free speech has been used to reassert a ‘we’ built around dominance and how the absolutist position provides space for this type of breaking.

The panel conversation also included law school Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and University of California National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement Fellow John K. Wilson.
