On June 5, 2020, Director john a. powell spoke to the New York State Youth Justice Institute about the unique risks that youth face from Covid-19. Although their infection rates are lower relative to the rest of the population, they have been beset by a particular set of symptoms. Additionally, the disruption to learning, socializing, and the emotional difficulty of having a family member fall ill with the virus are all deeply impactful on the lives of the young. Dr. powell discussed the social and emotional needs of youth, the disproportionate harms burdening children with marginalized identities, and ways to support healing from childhood trauma. powell also emphasized the importance of recognizing that many of the efforts to address society’s issues are being led by youth movements.
