Prof. M. Steven FishUC Berkeley Political Science professor M. Steven Fish recently appeared on the Decode DC radio show to discuss the perceived association between violence and Islam.

In the wake of the attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hedbo in France, Prof. Fish discussed a common perception of Islam as violent or more violent in comparison to other religions. “There’s nothing inherently violent about Islam,” said Fish, a member of the Haas Institute’s Religious Diversity Faculty Cluster

“A grossly disproportionate number of terrorist acts in the world, over the last 20 years, have been committed by groups claiming to be Muslims,” Fish said in the interview. “Most of those incidents, of course, are condemned by the vast majority of Muslims in the world.”

Fish is author of the book, Are Muslims Distinctive? A Look at the Evidence. The book looks at quantifiable and statistical data on the attitudes and actions of Muslims on topics ranging from social inequality, democracy to political violence and terrorism.
