On Monday, May 9, Executive Director john a. powell gave the "Public Policy in Action" community lecture at The New School for International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy in New York City. In his presentation, Dr. powell examined how public policy can serve as a vehicle to advance economic and social inclusion in the context of evolving demographic, economic, and political shifts in America. Specifically, he historicized the non-public and non-private space in the US—beginning with slavery and undocumented immigrants in the present-day—and detailed how the expansion of the corporate domain has led detention and mass incarceration to become, in Michelle Alexander's words, the "New Jim Crow."
