Over the weekend of May 6, Executive Director john a. powell held a residency with the Humboldt Area Foundation in Humboldt County, California. In his first keynote at Humboldt State University, Dr. powell explored with HSU students and faculty what neuroscience can tell us about bias, and what research teaches about the concepts and strategies individuals and institutions can use to effectively address structural racism and exclusion. In his second keynote, "Giving Birth to a Society in Which Everyone Belongs," john explored the questions: Why does prejudice persist despite strong social norms against bias? Can we ever more personally and institutonally move away from practices that exclude those different from us? With over 200 community members in attendance, Dr. powell helped the audience understand what we can do in our personal lives and workplaces to create a more welcoming community. Download here
