Laura Sterponi is a Professor of Language and Literacy in the Institute of Human Development and the School of Education. She combines methods from interactional linguistics, conversation analysis and linguistic anthropology to investigate naturally occurring uses of language, oral and written, in a range of institutional contexts, e.g. the home, the school, the hospital. Her work on communication in autism spectrum condition has revealed (1) dimensions of communicative competence in autistic children that were previously undocumented and largely unrecognized; and (2) interactional processes that have a bearing on the manifestation of autistic language.
