Haas Institute Executive Director john a. powell spoke to the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco Feb. 28 at the 4th Annual "Spaghetti Dinner for the 99%." The theme of the event was Black Lives Matter! and featured speeches from both powell and Tom Ammiano, former State Assemblyman and political commentator. In addition to his role at the Haas Institute, powell is also a Professor of Law, African American Studies, and Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley and the author of  Racing to Justice: Transforming Our Conceptions of Self and Other to Build an Inclusive Society.

powell was invited by Robin A. Larsen, chair of the Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco's Committee for Peace and Justice, who said she reached out to powell because of his “rich multi-disciplinary historical perspective on racism in America.”

The event, which aimed to recognize and bring together activists from San Francisco and the larger Bay Area, took place 6:00 - 9:00 PM at Unitarian Universalist Center in San Francisco.
