On October 4, 2018, professor powell was a discussant in a conversation organized by the California-based Roberts Enterprise Development Fund (REDF) on employment-focused social enterprises that aim to address the challenges of poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and incarceration. The audience included REDF operations and program staff with backgrounds in business and and a commitment to social justice and equity. Professor powell discussed othering and belonging in the context of the San Francisco Bay Area’s crises in housing, poverty, and homelessness. His recommendations for shifts in both narrative and policy drew upon the successes of the “Housing First” model employed in Columbus, Ohio, and Salt Lake City, Utah.
