Jake Tompkins (he/him) is the Information Designer for the Othering & Belonging Institute and develops engaging reports, social media shareables, interactive maps, and other graphics to help storytell with data and communicate research.
Before joining the Institute, Jake worked as a Designer with the United Nations and the Internal Revenue Service, where he bridged his passions for data and design to advance equality within federal and international domains. He received his Master of Library and Information Science at UCLA and his thesis focused on leveraging information and communications technology for mitigating, responding to, and recovering from crises. As a graduate student, he worked on social justice initiatives that helped leverage voice by digitally mapping COVID transmissions within California prisons, performing natural language processing with social media campaigns about policing, and building a participatory digital archive for artists and activists to document their experiences of forced migration and displacement.
