October 17–20, 2017
Habitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development taking place in Quito, Ecuador, from October 17–20, 2017. A bi-decennial cycle (1976, 1996, and 2016), the conference aims to reinvigorate the global commitment to sustainable urbanization, to focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, building on the Habitat Agenda of Istanbul in 1996. The conference focuses on the new urban agenda, which emphasizes that the future of our world's fast-growing cities must embody sustainable and inclusive designs, prinicples, and practices. Our own Senior Fellow, Dr. Victor Pineda is an active participant in this year's conference, including a live aerial human art project. Learn more about the art project (in English/en Español). In an interview ahead of the conference, Dr. Pineda referenced that universal design is critical to building more inclusive cities so that rights to the city can be preserved for all people.
