Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) Job Description*

Appointment: Hourly position (expected effort over the summer maximum of 25%)   

The role of the GSR is to provide research support and to write a policy brief coming out of a workshop on May 29, 2015 on “The Future of SNAP? Improving Nutrition Policy to Ensure Health and Food Equity.” The workshop aims to summarize evidence and research findings on SNAP, identify challenges of current delivery approaches, and discuss innovative measures (such as “double-up food bucks,” “market matches,” and/or restrictions on sugary beverage purchases and more), and recommended actions and changes for the future of SNAP.

This is an hourly position reporting to Hilary Hoynes, Professor of Public Policy and Economics.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide research support in preparing for conference: collecting articles and other resources from panelists, circulate these resources to registered participants
  • Attend conference on May 29, 2015; take notes during conference
  • Draft a policy brief (~5 pages when typeset) coming out of the conference. The policy brief will be released by BFI and the Haas Institute. The policy brief will summarize and synthesize the presentations, discussion, and recommendations coming of the conference on “The Future of SNAP? Improving Nutrition Policy to Ensure Health and Food Equity”

The following skills and experience would be attractive in an applicant:

  • Excellent writing skills (writing sample should show skills in writing policy brief)
  • Experience and interest in food policy, especially as it relates to US Food and Nutrition Programs, importantly SNAP)
