Cybelle Fox is Class of 1944 Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley. Her main research interests are in race, immigration, and the American welfare state. Her most recent book, Three Worlds of Relief (Princeton University Press, 2012), compares the incorporation of Blacks, Mexicans, and European immigrants in the American welfare system from the Progressive Era to the New Deal. Fox won six book awards for Three Worlds of Relief, including the 2012 C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Her next book, which will be published by Princeton University Press, focuses on the rise and consequences of immigrant status restrictions in American social policy from 1935 to 1994. Fox’s scholarship has appeared in leading sociology, history, and political science journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, the Journal of American History, Law & Social Inquiry, Social Forces, and Studies in American Political Development. She is also co-author of Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings (Basic Books, 2004).
