In 2014 the CBCF launched its China Study Abroad program to help expand learning and professional opportunities for African-American students in an era of increasing globalization. The CBCF Emerging Leaders: US-China Study Delegation is designed to provide black students with the opportunity to learn about China’s history, culture, development, and language during a two-week visit to China. Please note the deadline is fast approaching.

This program is especially geared toward students who have not traveled abroad in the past and may be less able or likely to participate in study-abroad programs.

This year, two groups of 20 students will take part in the program. The first group will consist of STEM majors and the second those majoring in business or trade. Program dates for the STEM group are June 25 to July 13, and for the business and trade group the dates are July 9 to July 27. We welcome applications from qualified students attending HBCUs, predominantly-black schools, or majority institutions.

The 2015 program is open to African-American students who meet the following criteria:

  • Living or attending school in the district  (CA-13)
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university (Community college students must be graduating in May 2015)
  • Majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics-related (STEM) fields, business or trade
  • Completing their second or third year of college in May 2015 based on credits earned
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have a valid passport at the time they submit their application; copy of passport required with application
  • U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.; proof of residency required with application if applicable
