On January 19, 2025, john powell participated in a panel at the Oakland Museum of California’s “Community Conversations: Reclaiming Democracy, Building Belonging,” co-hosted by the Othering & Belonging Institute. Addressing an audience of local leaders, youth advocates, and civic organizers, powell spoke about the deep interconnection between democracy and belonging. Drawing on themes from OBI’s Bridging series, he explored how inclusive democratic systems depend on fostering relationships across differences, expanding the circle of concern, and affirming shared values. The event emphasized bridging as a practice of radical humanization—laying a foundation for a multi-racial democracy where everyone belongs.
The Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley brings together researchers, organizers, stakeholders, communicators, and policymakers to identify and eliminate the barriers to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society in order to create transformative change.
