On November 12, 2018, Professor john powell participated in the 2018 annual American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting in San Diego, California. In the morning, Professor powell engaged in a fireside chat conversation with Dr. Anthony Iton, the Senior Vice President for Healthy Communities at The California Endowment. In the afternoon, Professor powell joined a panel discussion called "Weaving a New Narrative of Belonging for Health." The panel was moderated by Melissa Harris-Perry, and the other panelists included Ai-jen Poo, Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance; and Eldar Shafir, Professor of Behavioral Science and Public Policy at Princeton University. The panelists discussed narratives of poverty and health and how narrative plays a key role our current political landscape. Professor powell specifically discussed the power of narrative within the Othering and Belonging framework. There was a 4,000-5,000 in-person audience with an additional virtual audience via live broadcast. The in-person audience was predominantly comprised of private and public sector public health professionals and students with a good understanding of the social determinants of health.
