A well overdue retrospective of artist Faith Ringgold is currently on view at the New Museum. This piece, Tar Beach (1988), illustrates the story of narrator Cassie Louise Lightfoot, as she takes flight from her apartment rooftop on a summer day in New York City. The exhibition, Faith Ringgold: American People, will travel to the deYoung in San Francisco in July and we will be there! |

Belonging: A Weekly Practice

This is a low-pressure, restorative space for discussion, co-creation and growth. Runs every Monday, 12-1pm PST.

I discovered the joy of making through exploring my mom’s kindergarten-teacher-sized collection of markers, water colors, and construction paper as a kid. We had an ever disorganized “craft closet” at home (imagine an oversized junk drawer that my mom gave a dignified name). If I dug in the nooks and crevices I would find glue guns and stamps, scissors with funky patterned edges, ribbon and yarn, found stones with smooth paintable surfaces, and other random materials, like an elusive and puzzling box of sand. When I think of art, I think of the creativity and expansive imagination of my mom, even though she did not necessarily call herself an artist. These were some of my first examples of the ways arts and culture exist in informal ways all around us.
Now when I think of culture, I think of community and collectivity. I think of Dockweiler beach at dusk in the summer in Los Angeles, where I grew up. It’s in the music blaring Drake and Stevie Wonder from different speakers at the same time and the families and friends gathered around bonfires that are just starting to glow. In Brooklyn, where I live now, arts and culture takes shape in the form of barbecues at neighborhood block parties and book exchanges at my local community garden.
As an artist and writer with a background in facilitation, arts education, and community engagement, I deeply appreciate the unique ability of arts and culture to foster conversation, make information more accessible and inclusive, and build community through things like creative engagements and intentional play. I am excited to step into my new role as Project Coordinator for the Institute’s Arts and Culture Strategy and Summer Fellowship Programs, and to use arts-based strategies to support research and movement-building. I’ve worked across sectors in fair housing, community development, and art and social practice, and I’m especially excited to be at the Institute, where interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration is foundational to the work.

The Othering & Belonging Institute commissioned poet Michelle Lee aka "Mush" to write and perform a poem in three parts on bridging and belonging for the 2021 Othering & Belonging Conference. We premiered this poem and accompanying visuals—featuring an array of dancers, aerialists, and performers of all kinds—in three digital shorts directed by filmmaker Yoram Savion, with creative direction from conference emcee Sarah Crowell. |
